Family Law is the body of law that in
California governs marriage, marital
dissolution (also known as divorce),
dissolution of domestic partnerships,
paternity, child custody, child support,
spousal support (sometimes known as
alimony), domestic violence, premarital
agreements (prenuptial agreements),
post-marital agreements (“antenuptial”,
agreements made during the marriage),
cohabitation agreements, and related
topics. Family Law does not include
probate (e.g., wills, trusts, and estates)
or juvenile law.
Family Law cases are usually heard by a
special court (Family Court) that hears
only Family Law matters.
